CHASE THE PUMP

Back in the 70’s, Arnold popularized the phrase ‘getting a pump’ over the course of his bodybuilding career. This mantra continues to this day and is actually very valid.

When a muscle fiber contracts, it impedes blood flow by causing restriction on the vessels that circulate to the muscle bellies, which then causes the blood to accumulate and the ‘pump’ sensation we feel and seek.

This is why it’s a good indicator of muscle activation, the more fibers are recruited, the more pump is achieved. Since muscle activation is a precursor to growth (or muscle hypertrophy), chasing a pump can be a good way to measure effectiveness in training.

While there are numerous other factors in making progress with your training, certainly blowing up those biceps are just good for gym selfies.
