Training: The Details That Actually Matter

Over the 30+ years for training, I have learned, applied and changed many aspects of my training.

Specifically, besides progressive overload, below are some of the key impact factors that I have focused on to keep the growth going:

● Full Stretch & Full Range of Motion: Stop doing partial reps just to move more weight. Take your muscles through a complete range of motion to maximize growth and movement quality.

● Mind the Grip & Position: Changing grip or stance can create a better stretch on certain muscles, but watch out for joint stress. Listen to your body and find the range that suits you.

● Control Your Tempo (And Pause): Slow down the lowering phase (3–4 second eccentric) instead of dropping the weight. Adding a 1-second pause at the bottom stretch of movements increases time under tension significantly.

● Eliminate Momentum: Stop swinging your body during lifts! Sit down and/or with back support if needed to keep the focus strictly on the muscle being trained.

● Keep Tension High: Use cables or change your training angle to maintain continuous tension through the full movement.

Small adjustments in positioning, tempo, and control make a massive difference in your results.

What’s one tweak you’ve made to your routine or a favorite exercise that has changed the game for you?
