PRE MOTIVATION

What came first, the chicken or the egg?

Well, not going to go down that rabbit hole today but I would like to unpack what I believe comes before motivation.

Often, I see the focus and emphasis put on finding and staying motivated when it comes to seeking results. While I do like a nice dose of motivation, I think there is a key aspect that precedes finding that motivation.

There is nothing more motivating than seeing results. Once someone starts seeing results, what happens? They become motivated from WITHIN to continue marching forward. This is when the flywheel really starts to turn.

A person in a hood walks down a long desert road at sunrise, with distant rock formations. The mood is contemplative and serene.

So what gets the results? Action. Doing the thing required to produce the desired results.

Therefore, the key aspect to focus on to generate motivation from within is to target the action needing to be done. It doesn't need to be a big step. Maybe just doing a single exercise, not a whole workout. Or walking down the block before running a mile. Once we get a win under our belt, we’re ready to take the next step. Put enough of these together and that’s when things become undeniable.

Hands hold a colorful film clapperboard in a desert setting. Text reads: "Roadside, Jakob & Ryan, Thomas Tangher" with a timecode.

Don’t rely on external motivation, it’s fleeting. Find it from within, focus on taking action with that single next step forward and let’s create our own internal motivation that can never run out.
