DON’T BURN OUT

Burn out can be caused by alot of things. Stress (physical or emotional), not recovering, inadequate rest, overtraining and many other factors. I have a fairly long fuse, but have experienced this myself from all of these and more.

When we get to this point mentally and/or physically, not only are we far from the best versions of ourself, but usually we are set up for an injury, breakdown or at a minimum, reduced productivity and creativity.

So how do we prevent this? Here are four tips:

First, have a good barometer. Track your performance in the gym, or utilize one of the many wearable tech options. Both of these are leading indicators if your body is not recovering.

Second, be aware of your pace. Even if you’re wired tight, you still need to give yourself a break. A good rule of thumb is some sort of vacation once a quarter. It’s also why I like to program recovery weeks into my programming.

Third, listen to your body. Often, we don’t realize how burnt out we are until we give ourselves permission to recharge then are amazed at how well we fill and perform after the fact.

Fourth, take care of yourself. This includes proper nutrition, adequate sleep, regular exercise and hydration.

While burnouts are cool with cars, it’s still very hard on tires and will eventually lead to a flat. Don’t let this happen to you and keep the wheels moving forward by applying the brakes when needed.
