TRAINING WITHOUT EQUIPMENT

I’ve talked in the past about keeping things together while traveling, using a hotel gym, or finding a guest membership.

However, right now I have a number of clients who are traveling somewhere where a gym isn’t available.

First, know that a few days or even a week away from the gym isn’t going to derail you.

Next, the goal of days like this is to maintain your level of development. It’s surprising how little activity is needed to maintain progress. I remember back when I was rehabbing my shoulder after surgery and the minimal amount needed for progress.

Let’s talk about equipment. Bands are helpful and can be packed easily. You can also use other things like furniture such as chairs or jugs of water (remember the pandemic and gyms closed down??) Of course, simply doing bodyweight movements can be very challenging as well!

Green dumbbells labeled "Reebok" and "2 kg" on beige background, alongside a green resistance band with "Thera-Band" text.

There are different types of bands (handles, super, mini, etc). Some are better than none, and all are useful. If I had to pick one, it would be handle bands. Each type has its own advantages.

Tempo is crucial. Slowing things down will increase intensity.

Range of motion is another important factor. One benefit of bands is that you can get a great stretch, so take advantage of that.

Higher rep ranges are also helpful. Even though it might not be your normal approach, increasing reps will help fatigue set in.

Training frequency is something to consider as well. Since the intensity may be lower, you can often train more frequently, although you might experience DOMS with different movements.

In closing, when you’re out of your normal pattern, focus on what you can do versus what you can’t. Get creative, slow things down, and you’ll likely surprise yourself.
