TEN WAYS TO KEEP A POSITIVE MINDSET

Mindset is important. It’s one of the reasons I started my weekly Monday Mindset videos as we all deal AND benefit from it.
When we have a positive mindset, all else benefits: health, mood, relationships, performance.

Let’s start with the WHY and kick it off talking about hormones. Cortisol is your stress hormone. When this is high, your other hormones take a hit (testosterone, endorphins). By maintaining a positive mindset, you can reduce stress which can improve cortisol and hormone levels. Usually lower stress levels have a positive effect on sleep which again, benefits hormones and recovery.
These next two kinda go without saying. A positive mindset means you’re in a better mood. When you’re in a better mood, this usually correlates with improved relationships, which then trickle into the cycle I mentioned with cortisol, along with the other positive hormones.

Here are ten practical things that I have implemented and/or have had other clients give me feedback on what has benefited them.
● Physical activity. Specifically going for a walk/getting outside. Not talking about hardcore workouts here, but getting some general activity in.
● Proper nutrition. When you’re healthy and operating on good quality fuel, all the systems function better. Specific foods that I purposefully eat in this regard are: eggs, avocado, spinach, walnuts, salmon, beef, sardines, turmeric, dark chocolate.
● Gratitude. I’ve heard that you can’t be angry and gracious at the same time. Starting off each day
with gratitude is a great mindset approach.
● Journaling. Include the above, but write down what you’re grateful for. Also, wins, lessons, fixes are another great focal point.
● Reading. Whether this is personal development, fiction, something spiritual or another genre, this helps you get in the right head space.
● Music/sound. I’m a fan of background music or white noise.
● Meditation/prayer/breathing. Lumping all these together as I think they are usually combined. Doing them in the way that puts you in the right mindset and reinforces letting go of stress can be a big benefit. Everyone is very different in their type/method but the recurring theme is there.
● Affirmations. I love goal setting and planning, but once you find the Why Factors that keep you moving forward, repeat these frequently in a present tense to reinforce what you’re focused on.
● Block out the negative. We could also make a BIG list of all the negative we’re surrounded by: news, gossip, negativity. Limit or close these channels that are putting anything other than the positive into your system.
● Control what you can control. This one is a big one. Life throws things at us. When there are curve balls we aren’t expecting, remembering this often improves your reaction and your mindset to the situation.
Keeping a positive mindset is something we all deal with on an ongoing basis. While we can’t eliminate stress, the negative things the world throws at us, we owe it to ourselves to set up the best offense and defense to help with those situations.
