LOGGING

Today’s tip has nothing to do with trees, but everything to do about logging training.

As you can see in the picture below, I have training logs going way back to the beginning of when I started working out, which is over 30 years ago. I still remember when I had a meager 30lbs on the bar bench pressing.

A box labeled "WORKOUT LOGS" holds various binders and spiral notebooks, some labeled and worn, on a textured carpet.

Over the years, this has been a crucial tool when it comes to my training progress. Sure it’s awesome just to get to the gym, but it’s even awesome-er to make great progress while there!

Keeping a training log, whether it’s an app, spreadsheet or even old fashioned paper and pencil, is one of the best things you can do to make sure you make the most progress possible.

While some will say they remember what they did during their last workout in their heads, I’m going to call that one out. There is no way that someone can remember how many reps they did on the third set of the fourth exercise that was actually out of the normal order because someone was on the equipment they wanted.

Attention to details (especially when you have many years of experience) is a game changer when it comes to forcing your body to make progress.

Just like planting a tree, now is the second best time to start keeping a training journal if you haven’t before. If you do have the privilege of having some logs of the past, do yourself a favor and go back occasionally to see how far you’ve come, thank me later!
